⚙️ The Process

How Does It Work?

1
Step 1
Treatment includes flexion-biased exercises (relieving neural tension), core stabilisation and lumbar strengthening, manual therapy, neural mobilisation techniques, aquatic therapy, postural education, ergonomic advice, pain neuroscience education, gait training, and cycling programmes which are well-tolerated in stenosis patients.

Questions

Everything you need to know before your first session of Muscle Stiffness. Our experts are always available to help.

Yes. Most patients with spinal stenosis achieve good outcomes with physiotherapy. Surgery is recommended only for severe cases with significant neurological deficit or failure of conservative treatment.

Walking extends the lumbar spine, narrowing the already reduced spinal canal and compressing nerves (neurogenic claudication). Leaning forward (on a shopping trolley or bike) relieves this.

Yes — stationary or road cycling is excellent for spinal stenosis. The flexed cycling posture opens the spinal canal, allowing exercise without pain. Many stenosis patients cycle much further than they can walk.

Neurogenic claudication is leg pain, heaviness, or weakness brought on by walking and relieved by sitting or bending forward. It is the hallmark symptom of lumbar spinal stenosis.

Stenosis is progressive, but the rate varies greatly. Many people maintain stable symptoms for years with appropriate management. Physiotherapy helps maximise function at every stage.

A disc herniation is caused by disc material pressing on a nerve (usually in younger patients). Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal canal from bony overgrowth, arthritis, and thickened ligaments (usually in older patients).

You cannot prevent the bony changes entirely, but maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise (especially core strengthening and flexion exercises), and good posture slow progression.

Surgical options include laminectomy (removing bone to widen the canal) and spinal fusion. These are considered when conservative treatment fails. We help you optimise conservative management first.
